Dawn Awaits 03:16
Dawn Awaits 12/19/07 She came undone before the rising sun could end her fretful night The rays when they came couldn’t lift the shade or warm her from her fright She lay awake as her body quaked while her mind couldn’t unwind Not so far from dead riddled with dread murky visions of suicide Life’s a chore for a heart that’s bored which finds no reason to smile It’s how you frame and what you blame that turns a joy to bile It’s the mouth that swears that nothing’s fair which feeds the perpetual child So much is missed when one is pissed or born to be wild I rise with the dawn, fill my heart with a song Pay attention to the day, make love in many ways I cannot resist the subtle kiss of the sun on a winter’s day Or fail to see the sweet harmony of goldfinches aerial play The hawk that soars is so much more than a predator’s display Yes, even the words of the tortured girl have a beauty and sway The dawn awaits to waken life, the dawn awaits to warm and shine The dawn’s colors fill my eyes, the dawn’s rays have me smile The dawn’s rays awaken my smile, the dawn’s rays give me life

Every Bit of Your Heart 8/18/07 I don’t live my life waiting for sunshine Often cloudy skies make the best of days Silence is a friend of the hopeful Drink in the calm in steady rain You can swim in the ocean Of the feelings that give life to Every bit of your heart Passion is the toy of the playful Touch is the beacon of delight Laughing out loud sets the tempo I know everything is going to be fine Pitter pat on the leaves there The fresh scent in the breeze well I’m in no hurry I’ll take my time Wooing every bit of your heart Here’s my lap to rest your head To be your cradle and your bed I feel enchanted to share this life Feeling cozy to have you near The vibes are simple and sincere The light rain massages our minds Pitter pat on the leaves there The fresh scent in the breeze well I’m in no hurry with you at my side Sharing every bit of your heart I see our lives are dancing in mystery We are free to feel Frame the landscape with our eyes The room we paint In subtle shades of golden halos With moods so rich in musky flavors Pitter pat on the leaves there The fresh scent in the breeze well I’m in no hurry with you at my side Sharing every bit of your heart

Loving Life 03:13
Loving Life          12/31/08                                  I heard a child laugh the other day His whole body quaked till it gave way Lying on his back smiling at the sky I still heard his laugh when he was out of sight Like after a sumptuous meal I felt content and sated So calm and so warm Moved on silently elated I heard a couple argue everything Uttered every word with deadly aim Neither was trying to understand Rather to destroy or at least maim No matter what they said  You could only hear hatred No matter what one said It was endlessly debated Time gives us choice Looking for a friend  Or seeking confrontation Support and defend Or spout forth condemnation We can show love Yet keep high expectations We can give love Without us and thems Life gives us a voice Give each other what we need Our support and validation We can befriend Without choosing sides We can live love With calm determination We can give love And love being alive

She Didn’t Know 8/8/09 She loved the stories such as Sleeping Beauty Always knew her prince would one day come Finding her true love would be so romantic He would be devoted and handsome She didn’t know, she didn’t know She fell in love one evening on the dance floor He was so charming and gallant She married quickly and was so delighted Her wedding day went all as planned She didn’t know she didn’t know Her prince got warts but then she had a baby Oh how she loved this precious one Yet as he grew and got so independent Soon she found she really had no one She didn’t know she didn’t know One day she found religion gave life meaning She prayed to god and saw heaven She felt the world to be a great temptation All worldly pleasures she did shun She didn’t know she didn’t know She died alone one day and left her body And a world she never hugged Fantasy had always been what she wanted With senses gone there wasn’t one She didn’t know, she didn’t know

Turning Silver Into Gold           6/14/08                  My search ended long ago My heart no longer beats alone Meaning entered into my life The moment you became my wife I wept when I realized We were about to share all our time The years have treated us well We've been lovers, friends and co-casters of the spell Each night I lie with you I drift so calm, feel grateful too Giving you pleasure fills my days Making you happy I'll forever seek new ways For 25 years we've lived beauty Keeping our eyes kind and our hearts true Though thankful I hope for so much more The coming years hold such promise to uncork Our early years we climbed  now we can coast Spend even more time with whom we love most I cherish all that we create Our endless conversation stimulates and soothes Living beyond my dreams Is still what you have me do Turning silver into gold Turning silver into gold

Fictional Space 5/31/1982 There’s something of the mind which plays off circumstance Like a servant pampered king it can be wise or frivolous Unencumbered one used for strategy or evasion Place me straddled on this life Vision gives me pleasure and might Bash their monstrous heads, the survivors scheme Lovers engulfed orgasmic anticipation The hunter laughs at the snap of the trap Fictional space There’s something that’s the style which I won’t represent It’s a feeling of denial wan discouragement Harlots of the soul lost in merriment Visceral drives buried by excitement Moments take pride in invention Problems provoke awkward hesitation Solution, look to friendly vistas The future beckons the agile dancer Fictional space Make me alive set me on fire Make me alive celluloid fire

Zeitgeist Buddha  6/6/09 So you think it's great to read And you seldom watch TV Some dots on a page over more on a screen What is thought over what is seen And you speak with citations The elite are sophisticated It's your body you do flee forever reject your humanity Kill the self to be happy You say spirit is so rewarding Yet you keep making statements  which belie your selfless attainment Thinking with my little mind Feeling with my heart, I do Without senses the minds a bore Empty shadows without a core My blood rushes on as I do breathe Creates both me and reality I feel such elation In corporeal celebration  A better I exists in my mind not perfect more aware and kind Tied to this world and to my ego I accept time as my equal I refuse all temptation  To be a sage or saved one I sense a life through motion I live a life through touching you I try to live right action Feel the pleasure of pleasing you Holding on to life holding on to you

Interlude 03:09
Interlude 2/19/07 Neither alone nor united I sit on the stoop where I live Watching robins alight then dart between foliage and limb Between darkness and brilliance I ponder neither heady nor trite Somewhat calm and excited I am thankful for this respite Between sickness and health our bodies seem to bob and glide Somewhat conscious somewhat surprised is where I reside Neither war nor peace I fathom no real news to incite In the space between harmony and dissonance I take in this life I breathe in this life

Our Son 02:44
Our Son 3/4/1975 Welcome little boy Our illustrious toy We’ll show you how to feel From a boy to a man Take me by the hand and I’ll show you how to see Give you all the dreams handed down to me See the man kneeling down Praying to his god, praying to his god Old man do you wonder Is your child to be pure? Try to make him follow all of the rules Will he make you proud by acting the right way? And my eyes are clouded by the dreams they made me see It’s so hard for me to see what’s them and what is me What is really me? Will you make him bolder by making him colder Controlling all his feelings A contrived machine And my eyes are clouded by the dreams they made me see It’s so hard for me to see what’s them and what is me What is really me?

Deus Ex Machina 1/12/1979 Deluge of broken comedies, the joker licks the steam Laura struggles to make it better puts her pride in relief The treadmill keeps moving faster all is on the increase Before you slip into the chasm enter the god machne Keep your toes on the line don’t trip on that line, trip on that line Your hopes are in the future, so they tell you, so they tell you So they tell you, so they sell you all will be improve a little later Running cold, running bold, running blind, can you set the pace? Lunge onward in darkness blindfolded by the mask of innoncence Walk softly pretty lady have faith in the guiding hand Take a sleep on stony ground, not much you can do with this land Listen safe to the deep voice that tells you what lies below It’s cold, so cold and shady but a few yards yonder lies a brook You can rest there for awhile, rest there lover All looks so bleak, the edge of defeat, have faith in some alien god machine Kiss the treasure the golden dream for here comes the god machine Adorable god of fortune is late upon the scene Make me shiver in wonder of your awesome majesty Pluck us from the danger, the climactic deed If you’re made of plaster what awaits sweet destiny? Golden idol of reason celestial or divine Save us at eleven before our last midnight All looks so bleak, the edge of defeat, have faith in some alien god machine Kiss the treasure the golden dream for here comes the god machine Deus ex machina Enter the god machine Deus ex machina

about

I’m Just Saying

A few years ago “I’m Just Saying” became one of those ubiquitous catch phrases that seemed to come out of everyone’s mouth at some point during a conversation. Even when I made a conscious effort to not utter that phrase I found myself saying it reflexively in many a spontaneous conversation. It was amazing how often that phrase just seemed like the most natural and fitting response in so many situations.

Yet, just as quickly as such phrases enter the popular lexicon they often die out. Now, I seldom find opportunities to say "I’m Just Saying" even when I’m vigilantly looking for a chance to use it. It is amazing how a phrase can haunt our verbal worlds for a period of time and then just vanish from our tongues.

The album "I’m Just Saying" explores the power and freedom of language, how words articulate and express as well as create and expand. Words not only describe and capture the real but unveil the possible and the totally fictitious. Words alter and modify our thoughts and emotions as frequently as they reveal or define them.

The songs on I’m Just Saying explore and revel in the myriad of ways words can impact and influence our lives. Words can be used as an endless resource to enrich our experiences and our lives as well as become tools of diversion and self-delusion. I’m Just Saying looks at the power of words to become interlaced with our life experiences or become empty abstractions divorced from our bodies and our physical existence.

You can read a more in depth reverie on each song by clicking on the individual track and read the liner notes, yet here is a brief description of how each song fits in to the theme of I’m Just Saying.

A theme in the lyrics is the importance of our thoughts, (those words we say to ourselves) and how they impact our perceptions and feelings which greatly influence the tenor and meaning of our experiences. Words mold our perspectives which in turn create the world we see.

Dawn Awaits -- is a song of two contrasting ways of being in the world. First, a woman’s restless night is fueled by her anxious and depressed thoughts. Always living in her head she is blind to the beauty of the dawn and spends her time bored and discontent. The singer has a different perspective on the night and life in general. He wakes refreshed and bathes in the morning air and the warmth of the sun’s first rays. His body in anchored in the world and his mind revels in each sensation of the morning dawn.

Every Bit of Your Heart -- is a song celebrating the playful unfolding of life. While most days do not match our ideal, we have the ability and the opportunity to find the words which maximize the beauty of our experiences and make it possible to explore and savor every bit of our hearts.

What We Live -- celebrates a rewarding blend of active experience with reflective thought. We rest to wake refreshed and engaged in the day. Our hearts feel, our bodies sense, our minds ponder and derive joy and wisdom from our intimate exploration of life. What we know is what we live and what we live is a wonderful journey full of mystery and discovery.

Loving Life is another song of contrasting perspectives. The first scene is of a child at play who crumples to the ground in laughter and smiles at the blue sky above. The second scene is of a couple who argue and find fault in everything the other does. The song depicts the choices we have to either feel lovingly connected or to create opposing sides, and this choice is often dominated by the words we say to ourselves which color our perceptions and experiences.

She Didn’t Know -- warns of the dangers of taking too extreme of a romantic or idealistic view of the world and of those with whom we share our lives. The subject of this story took the words of fairy tales literally and made them into her life long goals and expectations.

Turning Silver Into Gold is a song about being married for 25 years and looking forward to the next 25. It shows the power and beauty of looking at a partnership and our lives with kind eyes and hearts. The words we say to ourselves and our partner make all the difference in the level of meaning and intimacy the relationship engenders.

Fictional Space -- explores the ramifications and implications of our being able to live in the possible and fictitious as well as the actual. Language creates our freedom to glide over and blend the past, present and future into a personal history and sense of self.

Zeitgeist Buddha -- is a song pointing out the downside of the tendency of modern man to overemphasize the importance of consciousness while at the same time devaluing or even vilifying the body. The singer seeks intimacy with himself, others and the world through the marriage of body and mind in the precious passage of lived time.

Interlude is a song celebrating finding the sweet spot between extremes in how we experience and think about life. While words can’t help but be vague concepts containing judgments often choosing between two contrasting viewpoints, they also contain the ability to interact with each other in ways that promote wisdom and appreciation. Through the endless combination of general ideal words such as couch, tree, anger and beauty we can begin to feel and think in ways that fulfill us and give us a sense of connection, accomplishment and personal development.

Our Son -- a young man reflects on all he’s been told, demanded and advised on how to think, act and feel as well as what to believe, value and revere. All of their words, their directives and expectations leave him confused as to who he is and what he thinks, as to where he begins and his parents and their ideas end. Even his mental and emotional rebellions seem to condemn him to forever debate the issues of his parents. He wonders when if ever he will truly find his own voice and became the speaker of his thoughts and feelings.

Deus Ex Machina is literally the god machine. It was a device used in old greek tragedies to save the day at the last most improbable moment. This song warns of the dangers of our believing that something or some invention is going to arrive at the 11th hour and save us from the path of world destruction we seem to be on. Beliefs are words that have to do with the possible or the imaginary, and as most songs on this album attest to, language divorced from the body, nature and lived reality is often empty, dangerous and futile.
