The refrain of the song says it all, she didn’t know, (that) she didn’t know, that she didn't know that she didn't know. In other words she didn't realize that she was totally unaware that she didn't know how disengaged from reality she was.
She saw all of life in soft focus and anything that didn’t fit her romantic view had to be ignored or mythically transformed. Her fanciful view of life prevented her from engaging in real relationships with everyone including herself.
She led a story book life and always saw what she wanted to see, and had little interest or ability to deal with reality or the parts of those in her life which didn’t fit her idealistic view. A husband, child and even life itself all became missed opportunities because of her refusal to see and appreciate things as they actually were, or at least from any other perspective than her own rose tinted one.
No matter how hard she tried to be optimistic and live the perfect story she always ended up disappointed and alone. Who would have thought that reality had more to offer than fantasy? Well we know one thing, and that is that she didn’t know.
lyrics
She Didn’t Know 8/8/09
She loved the stories such as Sleeping Beauty
Always knew her prince would one day come
Finding her true love would be so romantic
He would be devoted and handsome
She didn’t know, she didn’t know
She fell in love one evening on the dance floor
He was so charming and gallant
She married quickly and was so delighted
Her wedding day went all as planned
She didn’t know she didn’t know
Her prince got warts but then she had a baby
Oh how she loved this precious one
Yet as he grew and got so independent
Soon she found she really had no one
She didn’t know she didn’t know
One day she found religion gave life meaning
She prayed to god and saw heaven
She felt the world to be a great temptation
All worldly pleasures she did shun
She didn’t know she didn’t know
She died alone one day and left her body
And a world she never hugged
Fantasy had always been what she wanted
With senses gone there wasn’t one
She didn’t know, she didn’t know
