Dancing Hippos 11/16/90 I looked long into the eyes of deception I found caution to be my only true weapon I prefer jungles and the eyes of a tiger Where fear is real and no one hides their hunger Come sit with me in the clear warm shallows Away from heat and a gator’s sly gallows Swim in freedom with the dancing hippos Whose playful calm pacifies warring egos Life is easy when you feel it I know some consider me lazy A dreamer, a fool and just a tad crazy To share a pond with dancing hippos Not hunt game in the teeming jungle I know little of the world of survival Even less of the words in the bible I live simple and enjoy me freedom And look to love to give my life meaning Life is easy when you feel it Oh feel the breeze come comfort me Come dance with me Feeling all so free

Haunted 04:09
Haunted 2/13/89 The stillness is haunting as I look for clues My tears are like mercury avoiding the truth Hoping for justice does that make me blind Mourning the death of miraculous signs Science and reason start looking beyond Where have we come from, where have we gone? Magic seduces the heart’s that afraid If nothing’s lost tell me what is actually gained? Listen to the teardrops calming rain Looking for the footprints that remain Sometimes I wish I could turn to a power Who’d release me of anger when one’s purposely foul Punishing wickedness, embracing the pure Rewarding the lover with finding his cure I don’t see this in the world, so many feeling’s we must endure Magic seduces the heart’s that afraid, maybe hope does the same The emptiness is haunting, searching for meaning In dreams of destruction Listen to the teardrops calming rain Looking for the footprints that remain Looking for strength I know that I’m not alone There is a reason we all do survive That is because we’re in love with this life I keep feeling and yearning to hold Keep on this striving push me along Don’t give up trying, don’t turn your back Don’t give up trying, just keep on reaching The emptiness is haunting searching for meaning In dreams of destruction

Take Hold 03:42
Take Hold 6/29/87 Take hold of my hand we will walk on forever Life is a changing We can’t sit back and expect to grow old The kids can’t remember that Freedom’s not gained by waving a flag My eyes have seen many a tragedy People treating freedom as personal property Oh now let’s take hold, let us kill no more No fear to take control, let us kill no more People don’t give up on your dreams of love anymore, ’cause People we need all of us to take a stand extending hands Cry out for justice For only in tears will your anger die away Come now take hold let your feelings show Let’s not take more than the man on the shore Oh now let’s take hold let us kill no more No fear to take control let us kill no more People don’t give up on your dreams of love anymore, cause People we need all of us to take a stand extending hands Take hold of my hand we will walk on forever Take, take hold of my hand

Mob Rule 04:33
Mob Rule 7/16/88 My life keeps reaching away from storm But who’s that teaching a hateful scorn? Wisdom’s flame will blow out one day When fools keep talking their winds of decay I wonder if they know? What is believing if not adorned With wreaths of feeling one’s love restored? We need a leader today Who leads the herd not held in its sway I sit here waiting for you The people’s man keeps shaking hands Plays the crowd like a slick magician His words of hope there is no antidote He speaks our words so we believe him Makes me angry, makes me sad Makes we proud to live in this land What we want over what we need Seduces us into feeling free Feeling ecstasy, popular people telling popular stories Of comfortable change, popular people telling popular stories In limousines and dairy queens The cameras focus on smiling faces What is shown is all that’s known Along with words meant to please everybody Seeking pleasure, needing change The crowd’s excited just the same The torch’s ablaze, the mob’s enraged Self-righteous truth fuels the flame Mob rule ain’t that true? mob rule it’s what we groom Mob rule it’s who you know, mob rule to get control Mob rule just step in line, mob rule and let the anger fly Mob rule it’s how you act, mob rule now that’s a fact What’s right is right if you got the votes In a democratic land that called control Mob rule we’ve been had, mob rule it’s so sad Mob rule just one big bang, mob rule let’s wave the flag Where have all the heroes gone like the sheriff at the courthouse Speaking words of justice to calm an angry lynch mob?

Vertical World 6/23/86 Living in a vertical world Progress and decline the magic marker plots and tables (life) Towards the future the mythic past gets warped and labeled (time) Straight up and down we graph our success like The Dow Jones Average (need) We flee horizontally (what?) Indecision plods the time until we move on, oh how we move on Life of the warrior who never sits, he’s got his mojo working By god he’s always working People where are you going to? A house in the country a four car garage A kitchen never used, a bedroom just for sleep Living in a vertical world How you enjoy the time your finger pulses on the trigger (bang) Your steel eyes of blue are focused on the green of Facts and figures (lies) A whiff of snow and a shot of vermouth conjure the eye of the tiger The courage to rape and abuse You pump a little iron and chase after youth She’s got her mojo working by god she’s always working Working, how ‘bout you? I know I’m quite confused Another house in the country a 500,000 dollar massage A bedroom never used, a kitchen just for sleep Work, work, work make the deadline Make it or don’t make it, you are dead Vertical world leads nowhere

Anger in LA 04:59
Anger in LA 8/21/88 Walking past these moving shadows They all look out to avert my gaze When I want I hover closely Feel their heart beat, anxiety raised We know sanity has lost out We know change won’t otherwise come about Don’t stuff it now, anger in LA Don't shut it out, anger in LA Don’t you fear a passionate display I only fear we have lost our way Oh lord, anger in LA The time has come for anger in LA I don’t want to do it Please lord spare me this moment I walk a few miles, my god it’s getting late I know you’re guiding me thru this daze I never realized anger in LA The westward journey ended with anger in LA The suitcase in my hand is my only sensation This holy grail of god resurrected I climb the staircase, anger in LA The room is waiting, anger in LA Flipping the latch I assemble the solution No bird of prey just a flash of light Flowing thru me the rock of ages The tree of knowledge the tree of life The fiery serpent hisses in excitement Only out of ashes does a garden grow It’s only left to set the hour Then to watch the majestic glow I FEEL SO ALIVE, I FEEL SO ALIVE Maybe I could never believe in something better Maybe I could never believe in something Anger in LA, anger in LA

Edge of Eden 03:06
Edge of Eden 8/22/91 Hanging on to the past there is nothing more certain Than the pain the strange will induce Covering ourselves with the armor of danger We’ll do our best to subdue We’ll live on defeating intruders We’ll live on aggressive and bold Living on the edge of Eden we will beat them Living on the edge of Eden we will seize them Nothing will puncture our balloon No one will take this from you In the battle of life the fighters do flourish The winners decide what is true The gods of the victors are moral and just The defeated evil and cruel We’ll live on treading towards heaven We’ll live on deny Armageddon Living on the edge of Eden we will fight on Living on the edge of Eden we will march on Never letting go of pain Never trusting the strange I turn my head from the celebration and Mourn for the city left in flames I look away from my peaceful garden and Wish to share it with friends Here we stand at the edge of Eden With gas masks, hatred and rage Here we stand at the edge of Eden Killing it’s flowers and grain Living on the edge of Eden Living on the edge of freedom When will we wake up and end all our sorrow When will we wake up and look to tomorrow Living on the edge, on the edge of Eden Living on the edge, on the edge of freedom

DASS Army 03:56
DASS Army 2/12/76 I was warned of my enemy It distorted my reality A world of make believe Won’t you join me there? People running wild in the streets Young punks bombarded by the police Blood ridden faces yell for more We have our cause for which we swore I knew we had to change Influence was well within my range I prodded people into a rage They were so discontent People running wild in the streets Young punks bombarded by the police Blood ridden faces yell for more We have our cause for which we swore I didn’t know what to do I lost control so would you Panic stricken animals on the run Target practice for men with guns If I would have only thought We wouldn’t have been so lost My imprudence look what it cost Everybody’s son People running wild in the streets Young punks bombarded by the police Blood ridden faces yell for more We have our cause for which we’ll die for!

Status Quo 03:50
Status Quo 6/31/87 Looks like we’re back, back again Where killing for the flag is the only way to win The freedom we protect won’t wear thin Shoot another president if he’s dangerous as sin Oh what have we gone thru, how could we forget those bloody tears? Oh what did we fight for if it is still profit rules? Status quo now keeps our decisions clear Status quo is filled with constant fears Of who will bring us pain or steal it all away People keep hiding from the truth Oddly smiling faces on the nightly news Feelings are shown thru sordid clues Hiding fear and anger thru religious ruse Oh there’s easy answers if we don’t play the fool By clutching on to bodies that are long cold and blue Status quo now keeps our decisions clear Status quo is filled with constant fears Oh who will bring us pain or steal it all away Life keeps changing All we need is thoughtful change All we need is not to fear change Life keeps changing status quo Life keeps changing no status quo

Our Times Now 3/1/79 Walking thru the life in the street Nothing is much harder than to keep Your head from bowing low from the strain Your faith and hope and love from getting stained Down too far down, running ‘round, not too proud Lazy feeling eighty, much too hasty and let down Waiting to see someone make it go Cutting thru the muck much too slow Give me another dime says a man Who says this every morning since I was a lad Shrouds bring them down, going now I will plow Many of us angry, we will not stand it, our times now These are the hands which will carry you to safety This is the time to make our statement Our time, our time is now This is my life this is my day This is my life out of my way This is my life, all done my way This is my love, freedom today Freedom, freedom today

Speak 04:07
Speak 8/13/89 Fanciful pleasures of mind, fanciful pleasures divine Where the lovers of labor are lost, growing along Where the lovers of intimacy call, fugitives all Beware of the loyal comfortable slaves Beware of the people selling the same Fanciful pleasures of mind, fanciful pleasures divine Tails of villainous creatures of hate, coming for you Tales of seductive sinners in red, coming for you Beware of the loyal comfortable slaves Beware of the people selling the same It’s so easy so very easy, don’t get caught in emotional words It’s so easy so very easy, when other’s words don’t speak for you Hate’s too strong to based on national pride Fear’s too strong, sparks on a dry wood pile Killers all act on hate Killers all never wait It’s so easy so very easy, don’t get caught in emotional words It’s so easy so very easy, when other’s words don’t speak for you Speak, speak for yourself, passion is too potent for reflexive use Speak for yourself Don’t let them speak for you Make up your own mind

Denizens of Danger 4/15/89 I may not look like you I may not talk like you I may not show love like you I may not believe as you We’re all denizens of danger I may not behave as you I may not debate like you I may not die like you I may not show faith as you We’re all denizens of danger I want to live You want to live We want to live That is why we keep on trying I want to live You want to live We want to live That is why I give There’s no truth for all to agree For you’ll be you and I’ll be me A common goal a mass decree In our lives we must feel free We’re all denizens of danger I want to live You want to live We want to live So let’s live I’m not going to give up trying to live

about

In the vast majority of great movies, especially romantic comedies, the climax of the film involves the lead character having a revelation of how special and precious is life. In many cases the character, through a montage of past events, realizes what or who they really love and then make a decision to follow their heart, or they engage in an emotional monologue in which they profess their deepest feelings of love and appreciation. While the methods may vary, the end goal of having an aha moment regarding the precious beauty of life is almost part of every emotional climax, leaving the audience with a lump in their throat and a longing in their heart.

In a somewhat bizarre fashion every song in Edge of Eden is like the climax of such movies. Each song is its own separate story line and emotional environment in which the singer is describing something of personal poignancy. Some of the songs are playful, others reflective and a couple border on the tragic, yet they all are deeply emotional and environmentally rich disclosures and observations revealing life in its inherent richness and preciousness.

While movies slowly lead up to the climax over an hour and a half of story line, the songs on Edge of Eden get there in just a few minutes. And while movies end soon after the emotional climax or catharsis, the next song is cued up after a few seconds with another emotional climax not far away.

I know that even after hearing these songs numerous times there still are a few which give me goose bumps upon each listening. Their strong musical environments and emotional content have always made it easy for me to never tire of singing and playing them.

Yet, the album may prove difficult for the uninitiated to sustain the emotional tenor of the album, or some may find climax after climax a bit wearing or even irritating. No need to run an emotional marathon if that’s what it feels like. Listen to a few, take a break, and come back when you’re ready for another story.

A special thanks to John Barden whose excellent guitar work and musicianship added greatly to this project. Also special thanks to Robin Cape whose soulful vocals gave the songs an emotional depth and tenor that could not have been achieved in any other fashion.
