With increased volume of water and velocity a river or stream can become very powerful. Over time such a river can cut out deep grooves which only intensify its impact on the terrain.
In terms of society we speak of something becoming part of the mainstream. The more mainstream an idea or activity becomes the more powerful its influence and the deeper its grooves become into the fabric of society.
One of the major goals of propaganda and public relations is to create deep and lasting grooves in pubic opinion. Purposely directing all peripheral thought into the path of the mainstream to ensure a desired, ideology or entrench the status quo.
Propaganda also uses depiction and deceit to prevent the mainstream from going in undesirable directions.
Such freedom in the politics of deception
Can say most anything as long as its a ruse
The singer in this song is trying to warn and alert the listeners to try to ward off the influences of propaganda by resisting its negative messages.
Don’t let them goad you into hate
Make human kindness a debate
Yet, the singer also points out that no matter how conscious one becomes of the mechanisms of thought control being utilized by the masters of perception it does not completely ward off its influences.
We are held hostage but their deft imagination
Dicing up fictions that spice our daily stew
I feel no exoneration for remaining aware
I fall into the hollow eyes riddled with despair
He pleads for them to do their best to hold on to their basic life affirming values.
Don’t let them goad you into hate
Make human kindness a debate
Our social culture is the stream in which we coexist. Through vigilance, love and care we might be able to preserve its purity and not have it become polluted by false fears and hatreds conjured up by the masters of perception.
Let’s not pollute our life’s main stream
We all swim in the same stream
After all,
We’re all on the same team
We’re all floating down the same stream
lyrics
The Stream 5/10/11
Buried alive by the masters of suggestion
We’re not quite sure what to say or what to do
Everything turns white by the angle of deflection
It would be insulting if they weren’t so damn cute
Such freedom in the politics of deception
Can say most anything as long as its a ruse
We are held hostage but their deft imagination
Dicing up fictions that spice our daily stew
I feel no exoneration for remaining aware
I fall into the hollow eyes riddled with despair
Taking sides is to ignore the connection
Predator and prey are a part of me and you
Those eyes are so haunting I can not look away
The flow of life’s river carries me away
Don’t let them goad you into hate
Make human kindness a debate
If you’ve a god make him of love
Not good and evil, but how we’re all one
We’re all on the same team
We’re all floating down the same stream
We’re all in the same stream
We’re all of the same stream
Let’s not pollute our life’s main stream
We all swim in the same stream
