about

Table For One depicts the difference between being alone and being lonely.

In the first scene a woman dines alone in a restaurant. Her feelings of confusion and insecurity inflame her sense of isolation. Being the only accompanied person at the restaurant she imagines that everyone else's life is full of intimate sharing.

After dinner she walks home and each step she takes reaffirms her sense of having a hollow and empty existence.

Hears her steps echo through the streets
as she makes her way home

At home she pampers and consoles herself with a long hot bath. After her bath she has a cleaning cry and dreams of finding someone with whom she can share her life.

Shed tears of hope and doubt
Your heart is ringing out
Find someone to share each day
So the moment doesn’t float away

On another evening her experience eating by herself feels quite different. While truly being alone would be a harrowing experience, she feels herself surrounded by and connected to life. The street, the moon, and the others in the room become treasured moments of her existence. In fact, the couples at the tables begin to look less intimate and connected and appear to be missing the beauty of the moment.

She sits alone at the restaurant
watches couples play the game
Sighs at the beauty of the moon
her companions blind to its display

Feeling cradled by the preciousness and lushness of life she finds joy and integrity in her unique perspective and experience of the world.

She says,
No one truly senses or sees as me
Though at times that would be reassuring
No one truly senses or sees as me
yet being unique has its allure

While others may come and go, life itself is always there to savor, cherish and relish with a sense of gratitude and appreciation. Sometimes having a good seat is more important than who is sitting at the table.

My fingerprint is different
no one will ever touch the earth
or see the sky the same as me
Table for one
reserve a seat for me

lyrics

Table for One 2/17/12

Inside life at its very core
uncertainty does reign
Patterns form the exotic explodes
the familiar and the strange

She sits alone at the restaurant
befuddled and dismayed
Looks out the window into the night
the darkness and the rain

At each table couples talk
locked in each others gaze
The world paired off like Noah’s ark
her own flood waters will soon rage

Hears her steps echo through the streets
as she makes her way home
Lights some candles takes a bath
breathes in the lilac scented foam

Shed tears of hope and doubt
Your heart is ringing out
Find someone to share each day
So the moment doesn’t float away

Inside life at its very core
uncertainty does reign
Patterns form the exotic explodes
the familiar and the strange

She sits alone at the restaurant
watches couples play the game
Sighs at the beauty of the moon
her companions blind to its display

She says,
No one truly senses or sees as me
Though at times that would be reassuring
No one truly senses or sees as me
yet being unique has its allure

My fingerprint is different
no one will ever touch the earth
or see the sky the same as me
Table for one
reserve a seat for me
