Mardi Gras is a dizzying carnival where both audience and parade participants are essential performers. Eccentricity, excess and the suspension of social mores become the norm.
The six stanzas of Mardi Gras are filled with evocative images and ironic twists of meaning. Specific description and analysis of the verses would be counter to their attitude and give them more rational integrity than they are due. Yet, a few stray comments should still leave one open to find their own way to feel and internalize the lyrics.
The innuendo in the first two lines causes an initial confusion, which is amplified in the second half's discordance between time, space and fantasy.
The second stanza focuses on the the fickleness of popularity and fame while also suggesting that social groups often behave in set or even disingenuous ways.
Is the second mutation a reference to personal change or the frequency of cancer? When does the breaking of fashion sense become fashionable, or at least an enviable form of self-expression?
Sex sells, and porn and erotica, as well as beauty is often in the eyes of the beholder. Yet, often mass inhibition temporarily suspended by artistic acclaim.
Social Inhibition, prohibition and parental infidelity coupled with personal sexual repression, suppression and ambivalence seldom ends well. Carnivals after all are just temporary suspensions and release valves for pent up repression and inhibition, as soon as the parade ends the masks come off and life tries to go back to normal.
