We always experience far more than we actually sense. Our sight and touch fill out our experience from “a handful of clues”. We never see the entire room at once, but we assemble it from a series of snapshots, of glances and scans. Likewise we never see the entire couch but only a portion of the couch available to our immediate vision (not the back or underside, etc.)
Similarly we rarely feel an entire object. Yet, even with eyes closed we can identify and feel our cat from the slightest stroke of fur. Our being “present” is totally dependent on our past and accumulative experiences. The actual is filled out by the possible through our imagination, and our imagination is formed from our past experiences.
We successfully anticipate a forest scene from a momentary glimpse of the outline of needles and leaves or a faint hint of pine in the air before we bend around a curve on a highway. In almost every event and experience there are elements of recollection and anticipation as well as the active sensations and concrete perceptions afforded our eyes, ears nose and hands. All humans experience extends beyond itself and has its tendrils in the future, the past, the actual, the possible and the probable.
Yet, most people (never satisfied with the real) go way beyond the actual and base their life on eternal and absolute Truth. These foundational Truths found in science, religion and spirituality provide lives with a abstract meaning and purpose. These transcendental spiritual and cosmic Truths, which people describe as ultimate reality, stretch way beyond the parameters of human experience and existence.
I, on the other hand, prefer the thrill of the mundane and the mystery of actual human perception and experience. Instead of feeling a need to solve or revere ultimate mysteries and ideals that lie totally beyond space, time, and sensorial validation, I prefer to reflect on and savor the beauty and wonder of personal experience and the interconnection I have with myself, nature and others.
Life does indeed fill my days, and simple pleasures are the fuel behind my daily fascinations and joys.

Life Fills My Days 6/15/10
We are all masters of illusion
Forging certainty from a handful of clues
Whether it be science or religion
We forsake what is
for eternal Truth
its what we do
Never satisfied with what is real
With our hands, eyes nor ears
Even the desire to be in the moment
Must get beyond oneself
to cosmic union
into the blue
I’ve always lingered in fascination
Simple pleasures are my fuel
I never tire of the landscape
Every sensation draws me to you
Each and every day that passes
Ripens some low hanging fruit
Drinking in all of their juices
Breathe in the aroma
of morning dew
is my form of truth
I’ll swim awhile in your ocean
I’ll lie and rest on your soggy shores
Feel wet sand cool my backside
As evening rays warm my core
Life fills my days
In sweet subtle ways
Life fills my days
