Those who have high standards and ideals regarding social change often error on two levels. Their emphasis on change has them show a complete disregard for the status quo and the good that authority and the political elite have accomplished throughout history. The second error is that their obsession for change often lacks realistic or attainable goals making them little more than peevish childish complainers rather than instruments of positive change.
The singer in this song, while highly critical of the current power structure, recognizes and is appreciative of all those who came before him. Much has been accomplished throughout human history by the power elite as well as the reformers and the opportunities offered today are only possible because of all of the work that has previously been done.
I’m indebted to all who came before me
I owe my joys and comforts to global history
Yet, the increasing power and control of the financial elite triggers his refusal to comply and his desire for revolution.
There is no end to their insatiable greed
The robber barons beg my insolvent contumacy
While he wants to be an agent for positive change he dos not want to spend his his short time on the planet fighting endless battles.
I’m not lazy by any means
I’m not crazy and not extreme
I’m not a martyr nor a hero
yearn to be kind need no cure all
seek no utopia
drama nor an opera
Though he personally could probably carve out a nice existence he feels an indebtedness to past reformers to not just hide in the shadows and leave it to future generations to fight for their rights and fair share. Yet, always doing the right thing is less about battle than it is being life affirming, which means acting and feeling in ways in which everyone's life is enriched and full of joy.
simply do what can be done
for each and everyone
lyrics
Insolvent Contumacy 8/14/12
Well I’m not willing to hate the haters and
I’m quite reluctant to forgive the saints
I can see why so many are apathetic
Who so easily tire of my endless plaints
I owe my joys and comforts to global history
That’s why its hard for me to just sit on my hands and knees
I’m indebted to all who came before me
It is their voice that damns my cowardly reticence
I’m responsible to care for the children
To not needlessly deny them their blissful innocence
There is no end to their insatiable greed
The robber barons beg my insolvent contumacy
I’m not lazy by any means
I’m not crazy and not extreme
I’m not a martyr nor a hero
yearn to be kind need no cure all
seek no utopia
drama nor an opera
simply do what can be done
for each and everyone
