There is much in life that happens to us which we have little control over. Yet, inside and in-between these events there are gaps in which we are given space to react, feel, process and interpret. The gaps provide our life with options and choices.
We are free to experience these gaps as emptiness or with a sense of boredom. We are also free to impose beliefs and expectations on life and end up with a life riddled with regret and disillusionment.
These same gaps can be used as opportunities to make our lives full and rich. We can fill these spaces with intimacy and meaning. The open spaces provide perspective and can be filled with warmth and companionship.
The singer exhorts the listener to:
Look in the mirror, face what you fear, embrace life so dear,
Act in ways that bring deep satisfaction
Be your own idol, be your own best friend
Make the most of silence, let it steady your gaze
Give your best to others neither judge nor blame
Provide all with questions that guide them thru their maze
lyrics
GAPS 3/25/06
Flowers grow on an ocean isle, never touched, never seen
Martha cries in a moment of silence not quite sure what she feels
It’s only time fleeting,
It’s every heart beating
Gustav swore in a fit of passion that his son was dead to him
Lying now on a hospital gurney, he wonders if he has a grandchild or three
We fill in the gaps with meaning,
Tensions only sap our reason
I’ve pondered long this sensorial state
How to stay calm, savor not waste
Feel to the core, yet move with grace
Listen for the call, give nature its space
Too young to love too old to hate,
Terri clings to her mother’s waist
Lifetimes pass in a blink of an eye,
Crawling steady with precious haste
I’m born again on a daily basis
What I’ve learned keeps me agile and open
I unwrap the gift in anticipation
Of burgeoning life not just empty hoping
I’m not as valiant as the martyr or the sage
Sometimes I’m selfish at others I’ll fight for no gain (to end others pain)
Time is the inventor of both happiness and shame
Events create options as they take others away
Don’t skulk about, deny or do pout, make someone shout, or rely on illusion
Look in the mirror, face what you fear, embrace life so dear,
Act in ways that bring deep satisfaction
Be your own idol, be your own best friend
Make the most of silence, let it steady your gaze
Give your best to others neither judge nor blame
Provide all with questions that guide them thru their maze
Tend to the gaps, turn with the raps
Adopt a stance that promises to fulfill you
