about

I remember as a young child growing up in the midwest lying in an open field and looking up at the sky. The vast blueness of the sky continued on forever. No matter which direction I looked or where I scanned all I saw was endless blue. Even if I arched my back, tilted my head or even shifted my body to a new space endless blue took up my entire visual field.

Likewise I took many trips to the end of the pier in the town where I grew up, and from that vantage point I saw the endless blue of Lake Michigan stretched as far as the eye could see. At the horizon point the water and sky would meet and the view of endless blue stretched in all directions. Though I can't recall ever having the experience it is easy for me to imagine being on a boat in the middle of an ocean and seeing blue in every direction, and just living in a half globe of endless blue.

There has always been something very reassuring with the ability to have a blue view. In a transitory world of constant change there was always a little solace and calm in the blue view.

Yet, every night the night sky would reveal that behind the blue view was a visual theatre of stars to see, recognize and get to know. Likewise it was not difficult to scan below the waters of the lake to discover that an entire universe of endless variety was waiting for me.

My eyes scan the endless ocean
So stark yet complete
What lies below, such countless treasures
I have my whole life to seek

Yes, we have our entire lives to spend getting to know the worlds that lie below and beyond our blue view. In one way our lives and experiences seem like one vast continuous ocean, yet from another perspective all we see is overwhelming variety far beyond our capabilities and life span to acquaint ourselves.

At moments I feel so very connected to life, at such times I feel more of the world than in the world.

My body melts into the shore
I become the air, the water too

At other times I feel like the great joy in life is to be an invested observer feeling so fortunate to have so many things, thoughts and sensations to spend my entire life experiencing and integrating into my own personal existence.

oooh I’m just a blue view

Blue View 8/28/11

My eyes scan the endless ocean
So stark yet complete
What lies below, such countless treasures
I have my whole life to seek

The pelting winds pull me up
My ears hear as through a hollow tube
My skin alive in the thunderous roar
The seagulls caw sharp yet oddly muted

With eyes closed I tilt my head upward
My eyelids bathed in a reddish glow
My lungs fill with a cleansing fire
Everything softens my breathing slows

My body melts into the shore
I become the air, the water too
Pulsing in the ebb and flow
All that’s left is my little blue view

Darting like a kite in the sky
oooh I’m just a blue view
Floating up so very high
oooh I’m just a blue view
In and out with the tide
oooh I’m just a blue view
Like a pebble rolling with pride
oooh I’m just a blue view
