One of the cool things about this song is that it is written for my son and he played the drums on the recording. We recorded the song when he was 20 and so the lyrics talking about him being the future are very apropos. It was written as a song celebrating his emerging adulthood and journey of being the master of his life.
You are the future, this son of mine
It’s time to fashion a vision sublime
Create a space to dream a planful reverie
Don’t underestimate the life you can create
There is much to do to learn about being you
Do not abdicate and make it all fate
You are the future, this son of mine
You’ve got potential and so much time
My fatherly advice: Relax, enjoy the journey, and maximize the moment.
You have such freedom your body’s still light
There is no pressure you’re far from the finish line
The wiser man stays patient as the madmen rush on by
Stand in the mountain stream, let life’s fullness be your guide
Do what inspires and fulfill you. Don't be overly concerned with societies definitions of success. Treat your life as a work of art, and be the engaged producer and star of your autobiography.
There is no hurry, building takes time
There is such beauty in a contented sigh
Try to initiate a life of style and grace
That fills you up with pride in both heart and mind
Try to orchestrate a song with power and pace
That speaks to you and to others too
You are the producer, this son of mine
Of the motion picture, your life’s design
Be enthralled with life and blaze your own trail with calm determination.
Step into the morning light tethered to the sunny skies
Wake the steel that lies deep inside
This son of mine
You see life, you feel life…… a contented sigh
Fill your life with passion, intimacy and joy, my boy.
Got to feel alive, let your magic shine
Love to sing and dine, this boy’s all right
Got to feel alive, let your magic shine
Love to sing and dine, this son of mine
Time to free your mind
