The method I most frequently use to write a song is to just play chords in a rather random fashion until they begin to coalesce into a distinctive mood. Then once one section emerges I begin to string sections together while the vocal line and lyrics begin to emerge.

This song came alive with a certain "bubble gum" bouncy pop rock feel to it which was quite unusual for me to embrace. So the story line of a guy stuck in a rather sugar sweet "gooey" relationship seem to fit the bill.

Though his lover is beautiful, energetic, fun and sensual, the relationship lacks a level of intimacy that only disclosure and reflection can provide. it is this lack of intimacy that lays at that heart of why their joyful ways leave him feeling empty inside.

It isn't that he needs conflict or finds a joyful disposition intolerable, but rather he wants their joy to reverberate through their entire being and be gained through deflection or thoughtlessness. This is why the bouncy and happy feel doesn't disappear as he says goodbye.

While their joy is empty for him, he is aware of the possibility that it isn't empty for her. He would be thrilled if she wanted more from him and from life, but he has no desire to hurt her or have her feel bad.
