about

In Somebody we partake in an ecstatic ceremony celebrating the interdependency of the people to each other and the land. The celebrant calls out to his friends to reforge the bond between each other and nature through verbal recognitions and vows.

He points out that “loneliness is like a song never sung” and they respond with a commitment to avoid loneliness by singing together. They profess to move together and provide each other warmth to stave off all the ills that come with isolation and separateness.

Whether it be the bond between lovers or the community at large, one gets strength and validation through their connection to others. We are not only the major source of protection for each other but also the main source of life’s meaning. Not only does the presence and words of others provide us with guidance, but they are also the greatest source of intimacy in our lives.

We all can take solace in the womb of love that is created by a caring community. The rhythmic drums cement the undulating connection we feel deep in our core, and help us enter an orgiastic state of harmony with the very inhalation and exhalation of all of life. All living things are connected by these shared breaths and it is through words and song that we often most strongly feel the power of the air we breathe.

The power of shared community is both deeply gratifying and potentially dangerous. Yet, the ceremony presented in Somebody is attempting to ground friends in the most life affirming aspects of the group. The power of the land is in our hands and we are getting stronger, yet our strength is best served when it is shared and celebrated by all. Exile does not only punish an individual, but opens up the entire group to the possibility of retaliation.

When we touch I feel your soul blend in to mine
When we touch I need to crawl inside
Inside this womb of love
Give me Some body

In Somebody we celebrate our connection in its visceral entirety. We are not just kindred spirits, but intimately interlaced bodies breathing the same air and find great comfort and healing in touching and being touched.

lyrics

Somebody 12/26/1983

Give me somebody, I need somebody

I move in circles inscribed with fear
(let’s move together)
There’s suffering in lives that cry to be touched
(I hear such crying)
Loneliness is like a song never sung
(let us keep singing)
Let us bring warmth like the noon day sun
(keep shining always)

Give me somebody, give me somebody
The dogs that howl in the heart of the night
(feed on the lonely)
But when I reach and touch your hand
(feeling much stronger)
Give me somebody, I need somebody

When we touch I feel your soul blend in to mine
When we touch I need to crawl inside
Inside this womb of love

The spirit that lives is filling me up
(we’re getting bigger)
The power of the land is in my hands
(touch me all over)
There is a land of paradise
(let us please go there)
Where beasts are our friends and plants fill our needs
(let us please go there)

Give me somebody, I need somebody

When we touch I feel larger than before
When we touch I need to crawl inside
Inside this womb of love

With eyes closed I’m pulled towards you
Drawn to you
Come let us touch the power divine
Where souls are spared, life alone and blind
