about

The entire album has focused on the many facets of passion, play and desire which often accompany loving relationships. The album has also looked at the power as well as harm that can come from the social bonds of community as well as those that can occur from personal relationships.

Love and Intimacy are powerful forces that can transform a persons life and fill it with it meaning and beauty. Yet, personal and social inhibitions and fears can not only hinder or rob all the benefits of communion, but actually turn it into a fierce beast. Such fears and inhibitions are at the base of so many violent acts of passion, and social atrocities such as war.

Sometimes at the height of infatuation life seems to have reached a limit of perfection. When one feels so complete, it is hard to find ways to feel more grateful and appreciative. At such times thinking of a time of great loss which is in such contrast to one’s current joy is a way to even deepen feelings of gratitude.

In She’s Not Here, the euphoria of love is balanced by the knowledge of how fragile is life. No love can be taken for granted, and only our constant dedication towards seeking and savoring all the love in our life can help it survive during times of tragedy.

She’s Not Here is a song dedicated to a friend of mine who drowned saving the life of two kids when she was a life guard on the shores of lake Michigan. We were close, but never lovers. Yet, I often try to imagine the sense of loss a lover has when their beloved dies, or the devastation parents must feel when their child dies young.

Often the greater the love, the deeper the loss. The beauty of mourning is in its ability to expose how deeply and intimately one loved the person who has died. In one way death ends the love we have for another yet in another way it celebrates and highlights then love we felt. The death of a loved one is a cruel but powerful reminder of how incredibly precious and important love is in our experience of life.

lyrics

She’s not Here 3/20/1986

She’s not here, I wish I could pull her back out of the blue
She’s not here exploding memories leave only the deadly truth
I don’t know who to make it better
I don’t know hot to laugh without you
Going from morning to night is painful, for
I just want to dream of you
I can’t bear losing you

I hope these tears will soon start healing
To close these open sores my past is bleeding
My life is missing the eyes that watched
Giving depth to time and
These feelings, so many feelings, I don’t know what to do
And I don’t know what to do with these feelings, so many feelings
I don’t know what to do

I live such a quiet life, just
Me, my girl and tender times, but
She’s not here, the emptiness inside, I’m so empty inside
Even these tears now seem so empty without her hand on my hand
When I remember at least I’m feeling
Feeling, feeling, I’d rather take pain
Than lose the sensation of us embraced
I’ll lie here awhile where we often have laid
Taste some precious moments, bathe in the pain of
Those feelings, so many feelings, I don’t know what to do
And I don’t know what to do with these feelings, so many feelings
I don’t know what to do

I’ll never forget the times
