about

A young man is mesmerized by the milky while skin of a young woman which almost appears to glow in the dim of the room,. She finds his timid admiration both touching and enticing. She approaches and asks him to take her home.

In a surrealistic fog he both leaves and spends the night with her. Her beauty is captivating and her passion is exhilarating. He quickly falls for this sensuous and uninhibited beauty.

Yet, he soon finds her capricious moods to be difficult to follow, and her passions difficult to keep from deteriorating into anger and conflict. Orchestrally the sound of breaking glass starts to stalk the song just as does her needs for drama and pain.

The breaking glass symbolizing her destructive and violent temperament which she uses to goad, challenge, insult hm and harm herself. The broken glass surrounds them making it impossible to make any movement which does not cut oneself or each other.

He gets caught up in her whirlwind life, quickly switching from thrilling ecstasy to danger and hurtfulness. Lost on her treadmill of motion and drama he struggles to regain his sense of inner composure and his will to be a good person.

He finally takes a stand and resists both her assaults and her self-destructive behavior and lets her know that he no longer will leash out at her, or join in her self-destruction. While he still cares for her and would like to heal their relationship he makes it clear that he will no longer get sucked into her drama.

Yet, whether it be as a friend or a lover he would be there for her if she was ready to face her demons and begin to show care to herself and to those around her. While he senses that she is emotionally damaged he also sees a person desperately looking for help. So, the song ends with him refusing to either attack or desert her.

lyrics

Shared Destruction 9/23/84

She sips a drink and looks my way
Dressed like the evening she stalks her prey
Her alabaster neck shimmers against her gown
She’s the moon this evening the prettiest sight around
“Give me the answer” she says with a smile
I could say nothing I guess my body responded
Such was the weekend spent thoughtless and wild
Without a cautious breath in lust we were bonded

Shared destruction
You want shared, you want destruction
Tell me about it woman
What are you going to do about it boy?

Every evening party, yes all the time
Girl you get me to give in and lose my mind
Ooo we sleep spinning thru time
You wake looking to fight
We make love to put out the hate
Shared destruction
I wonder who told you that love is a fight
I’m happy to hold you, we don’t need all the junk
You live life like a movie all motion and light
We got tears, laughs, and shouting, but the story is stuck

Shared destruction
You want shared, you want destruction
Tell me about it woman
What are you going to do about it boy?

Every evening party, yes all the time
Girl you get me to give in and lose my mind
Ooo we sleep spinning thru time
You wake looking to fight
We make love to put out the hate
