about

The fight for survival has dominated most of human history. The lack of resources and security demanded us to carve out a life, which even for most of the fortunate ones, was little more than subsistence. Often times it came down to a need to kill or be killed, and survival came down to a combination of steely resourcefulness and a little good fortune.

Yet, due to our ingenuity and intelligence we have come very far. We have not only survived but flourished. Even though our numbers have skyrocketed, the quality of life for many outstrips that of the pampered elite of previous time periods.

During our times of struggle we developed many practices, beliefs and customs which helped us survive both mentally and physically. Yet, the remnants of many of these very beliefs and attitudes now impede our progress and ability to live happily and harmoniously. Many of our current battles could be avoided if we were to free ourselves from the more aggressive and selfish methods steeped in the fear and hatred.

The first and third stanzas of Immortal Enemy deal with some of the antiquated fears and beliefs which now impede our personal happiness and social harmony. The second and fourth show how our current level of comfort and quality of life can be used as a spring board for peace and harmony.

Is it unrealistic to think that the image of comfort, contentment and intimacy depicted in the last stanza could be commonplace for the majority of people? i doubt if it is any less realistic than the modern model of fear and hatred which dominates our political and social sphere today.

We are just as much creatures of love and compassion as we are creatures of fear and domination. Our desire to create is as strong as our ability and desire to destroy. If this wasn't so, humanity wouldn't have survived let alone flourish into the billions.

I think it is time for the us to stop letting the discontented fear and hatred mongering amongst us dominate our social dialogues and domestic and international policies.

lyrics

Immortal Enemy 4/9/07

Don’t want to live a life of choosing heads or tails
When doing what is right causes one to fail
Some tell us our sight is something to bewail
For only death gives life like the holy grail

Wade up to my knees the surf hisses out its foamy gems
Shiver in a breeze each hair stands on end
The orange ball dips low out of sight
Darkening skies draw out the sounds of night

The phantom lives on in primordial tales
Of mysterious love on which most are impaled
Where doubt is a sin causes eternal pain
The absence of belief dowsed in perpetual flame

Campfire to our backs warms our spines
Waves lap a shore dance in moonlight
My eyes take in the starry sky
My lungs take in a calming sigh

Let’s bob along with the moonlight
Rest our heads in sensorial delight
I feel your hand touching mine
I feel your pulse matching mine
