This is a song about a young man whose reaction to a cold and abusive childhood was to become dedicated towards cultivating an intimate life full of passion. While many escape an abusive and volatile family home through fantasy, his fantasies were about sharing, disclosure and becoming as intimate as possible with his partner.
Intimate and passionate relationships are not come by easily. Breaking through one's inhibitions and insecurities is difficult enough, but helping one's lover do the same while remaining kind and non-violent is even harder. Especially when one's family home was filled with violence and abuse.
Passion for this young man remains a constant goal and vision and the intimacy it provides him sustains his good intentions and fills his life. This young man knows that passion without care and intimacy can degrade into control, violence and abuse. His parents spent so much of their time trying to control and deny their passionate natures and though they sometimes succeeded sooner or later they would explode and their passion quickly became violent and harmful.
Such observations had him realize that suppressing or ignoring passion seldom works and that ignored passion will usually seep out in destructive ways. Yet, he knows he can keep passion a positive force in this life if he can continue to funnel it into intimacy and care, and not let it become a weapon of his own hurt and disappointment.
lyrics
I Need Passion 12/29/91
When I was little I was my old man’s punching bag
I kept on living by the fantasies I had
I dreamt of love, I dreamt of fantasy
I dreamt of women sharing everything
No sense of family without a real home
I was a love bomb itching to explode
I dreamt of love, I dreamt of fantasy,
I dreamt of women sharing everything
I need passion in all that I do
I live passion in my every move
I use passion to get deep inside of you
I need passion at least twice a day
As I get older, life is perpetual change
Yet there remains things that stay the same
I dream of love, I dream of fantasy
I dream of you sharing everything
I need passion to light my fire
I live passion and never tire
I use passion to heat my wire
I need passion, so do you
