I chose the title For Goodness Sakes because it fit the mood of dismay of the lyrics as well as the idea that we need to make changes for the sake of Goodness.
It’s been awhile since sincerity
Has been used to move hearts
In the first two lines of the song I state how rare sincerity is in our society. We live in a capitalistic economy where wealth is created through making a profit. Seldom if ever is profit maximized by telling the truth or not over emphasizing the value of a product or service.
Likewise in democracies politicians find it beneficial if not essential to deceive, misrepresent or distort the truth in order to get the most votes to secure their winning an election. In essence honesty and accuracy of information is an endangered species in modern society.
They want you scared and oh so anxious
They want you to believe life’s on the decline
PR departments learned long ago that a discontented, envious and fearful consumer buys far more than one that is content and happy.
They’ll feed your addictions while heaping shame
Beat the terrorists is their perpetual song
Likewise politicians learned that frightened, angry and hateful xenophobic citizens make for more loyal citizens and soldiers who will support their wars and imperialistic actions.
Men who do rule seek subjugation
Men who do rule demand loyalty
Lost and afraid you work so hard
We fail to peek beyond the debate
As naked aggression passes for diplomacy
People who realize that they are being lied to and manipulated frequently begin to lose their sense of security and trust. Years of deceit make one feel isolated and alone.
Years of deceit lead to depression
For Goodness Sake we need to create a society that rewards and encourages honesty rather than our current system which fosters and rewards deception, manipulation, perceptual management and exploitation.
yes, for goodness sake
yes, give me a break
Tell me, tell me, tell me something real
Most people cherish and value honesty, sincerity and truth. Yet, people learn to accept and participate in deceit and deception when it leads to financial and social success.
lyrics
For Goodness Sake 12/30/07
It’s been awhile since sincerity
Has been used to move hearts
My cries of emotion is what I feel
Not just a play to win the part
Years of deceit lead to depression
Lost and afraid you work so hard
Without the truth you get obsessive
Fill in the gaps by keeping busy
Living easy is hard to do
Staying relaxed amidst all the motion
Singing and sighing and shouting and trying
While floating so light in your ocean
Men who do rule seek subjugation
Men who do rule demand loyalty
The will to be free is no slight transgression
Sharing a meal is weak heresy
They want you scared and oh so anxious
They want you to believe life’s on the decline
They’ll feed your addictions while heaping shame
Say you’re responsible it’s your life
The man in the mirror is losing face
Our standard of living is falling off the pace
The fear they foster keeps us docile and meek
Their supposed wars for freedom is not what they seek
Years of deceit lead to depression
Lost and afraid you work so hard
Without the truth you get obsessive
Fill in the gaps by keeping busy
We fail to peek beyond the debate
Right and wrong are our only choices
It’s 50/50 or so they say
What feels right we’re told is wrong
Beat the terrorists is their perpetual song
What is logical is conspiracist theory
As naked aggression passes for diplomacy
Ooh, ooh, yes, for goodness sake
Ooh, ooh, yes, give me a break
Tell me, tell me, tell me something real
