A young man seems to be surrounded by those who are confused, eccentric and trying so hard to impress others. He wonders who can shed some light on how he should proceed or stay true to himself.
While his peers and acquaintances seem lost, those in the news who move in the world of success and fame appear to faring no better. He sees suicides, people who have sold out or become trite, or who have lost contact with any sense of authenticity.
At times it seems that success and being a genuine person of substance are not compatible. Though he would like to become of impact, he implores his friends to keep him in line, and to help him avoid the pitfalls he identifies in so many people of influence.
lyrics
Don’t Let it Happen to Me 5/24/1977
Nothing’s very certain in a certain kind of way
Oh who’s got that light
A closet albino puts dye in his hair
Oh who’s got that light
A time lapse hermaphrodite leans heavy on your ear
Oh who’s got that light
Hazy piano people soak their fingers in wine
Oh who’s got that light
Now they will tell you how to succeed
To be a famous human being
All the golden stories how to seek your fame
The smiling gigolo rides a limo in shades, but
Don’t let it happen to me
Dorothy took some pellets, Freddie got his head
They all strived to hear the applause
All the golden fables turned out to be sand
All the fallen idols buried in the land, but
Don’t let it happen to me
Many people made it by what they said
In love with fame their message is dead
Life is an illusion peeled from the screen
The lovely legends trapped in the stream, but
Don’t let it happen to me
