This song is a collection of scenes and images depicting opportunities for intimacy, significance and meaning which somehow went astray. As in the title of the songs the expected warmth and comfort of sunshine is somehow missing and all is instead cold.
An aspect of young adult angst is often finding one's attempts to connect or impact others to be hollow, empty and often times alienating. Yet for some their risky attempts to be the hero or the star can end up in tragedy. Most of us find our clumsy attempts at becoming "somebody" are just temporary moments by which we learn the importance of just being who we are and finding our way through being genuine and patient with ourselves and those we care about.
lyrics
Cold Sunshine 4/24/1979
In the arms of a stare of a wolf was a hare
Sandy felt the same
Of an ape named George in sex a big bore
Just an old flame
Jody does moan sits in bed by the phone
She feels so all alone
All in a fluster ‘cause all he could muster
Was some cold genital custard
The leaves turning brown
Come falling to the
Ground is cold like the bodies of old heroes
And the sins in their smiles
Make it all worth while
Ted’s in a steam got so obscene
Got into everybody
Drinking in vain, attempted insane
Just one at the party
They all spent the night feeling so tight
When they woke in the morning
Sheila played the wife with all her might
But who was she fooling?
Coffee eased the pain
No we’re all in phase
And we’re here fighting our own wars
And the tears that we’ve shed
Have opened so many doors
Oh lord let me live thru the night
When prayed as he played with his pocket knife
He sweat as he swayed on his way
To the old school yard
The gangs were both there in the midnight air
Not much to see in street lights
Some blood had been shed, then they all fled
From the coming sirens
