Our lives are comprised of sensations, perceptions and feelings. Being self-conscious we have the additional ability of being aware of our experiences and to organize them into a personal history.

The miracle of language gives us the ability to think, reflect and organize our experiences but also to share and articulate them with others who also have the ability to think and speak. While the novel and new can add much to our lives it is the routine and mundane which most provides our life with a personal history full of love and intimacy. Over time the deep grooves of that which endures gets poignantly etched into our hearts and minds.

10,000 Miles is a song celebrating and bearing testament to the beauty contained in a long term relationship. Like a good stew, a partnership’s unique rich flavor is acquired slowly over time. There is no short cut to the kind of knowledge and familiarity that years living together and processing all that one thinks, feels and experiences produces. Each and every day the core of the relationship is strengthened by the familiar and routine while a few more grains are added by the expansion of history and the special tenor of each day.

Any event or feeing that happens twice a day will have occurred more than 10,000 times in a little under 13 years. So the reality is that most couples have laughed, eaten, talked, kissed and held each other well over 10,000 times as long as they've been together for a dozen years or so.

Modern societies often emphasize the importance of autonomy and individuality, and either directly or indirectly frame any dependency on others as unhealthy or a sign of weakness. This could help explain why many relationships become more competitions than partnerships and that me time becomes more valued than we time.

The sense of satisfaction and accomplishment I get from being part of a long term relationship matches if not exceeds that I get from my sense of being a unique and well intentioned individual. It should be obvious from my songwriting that I enjoy and prefer full and lush arrangements and orchestrations over being a lone troubadour.
