about

While the title of this song references a character from the surreal world of Alice in Wonderland, the song itself takes a poke at the surreal world of symbols and the subterranean universe of the unconscious.

In Alice in Wonderland the Mock Turtle is a depressed and histrionic character who is eager to tell his story and mourn the fact that he used to be a "real" turtle. In essence the Mock Turtle would have been an excellent candidate for early Freudian Psychoanalysis.

Alice in Wonderland enjoyed a resurgence of popularity by the acid tripping crowd due to its hallucinatory nature, and Alice's changes in space/time reality which occurred each time she ate mushroom like substances. During the time period when this song was originally written circa 1975 many cutting edge psychologists were likewise investigating the psychological experiences and revelations offered through drug experimentation.

Wielding a bizarre array of symbols, unconscious desires and mythic allusions some practitioners of early psychoanalysis claimed special privy to true reality. Anyone who refuted or tempered their theories and conclusions were considered to be in denial or pathetically unaware of their unconscious impulses which are at the base of their resistance. Or so they said.

What better way for the weak to seize power than by being keepers of the hidden reality of the truth that lies beneath every one else's illusions. In some ways much of psychology is part magic and part religion, while always claiming to be objective science.

The song begins with a sexualized image of a princess followed by references to the symbolic ink blot tests which are being viewed by lab rats whose reactions are being anally monitored.

The next stanza describes a pandoras box of nightmares and impulses which lie in the other dimension known as the unconscious. Yet, underneath all of the psychologists theories and interpretations often lie his own "projected" dreams and illusions.

The princess of the first stanza becomes the diabolical queen, a nightmarish transmogrification of the psychologist in which his sexual urges are expressed by his drooling on my hand. The power of his statistics and theories are an over compensation for the fact that he was picked on and bullied in his early years. Yet, now he can exact his revenge on his tormentors by reading their unconscious and labeling their pathology.

Both religion and psychology view man as stained and evil. Whether its the eating of the apple or the Oedipus complex the fall is inevitable and any desire simultaneously announces the emergence of both our individuality and our evil nature. As the singer says "the evil from the outside comes from within".

Judged and labeled as neurotic at best by the psychological profession, the singer jokes and acknowledges that his basic animalistic impulses are seeping out. Yet, while embracing and celebrating his passions and emotions he ends with one final jest that his sexualized self just wet his pants.

Most forms of satire contain some seeds of truth pointing out one form of exaggeration with another from an opposite direction. Any claim to ultimate Truth, Certainty or hidden reality is always worthy of parody.

lyrics

Mock Turtle Dreams 6/5/79

Pass the pretty princess
Lying in the sand
Looking at the inkblots
A Freudian demand
Stands a huddled mass of
Laboratory rats
Who sit there nodding
Wires up the ass

In a vault of goblins and werewolves
Sits a box of horrid destruction
Plethora of symbols
All tied in some way
Act out a secret life
Another dimension
Somewhere hidden
On the perimeter of desire
Lurks the impulse behind one’s reason

Under his dialectical schemes
All those mock turtle dreams
Under his objective gaze
All of his mock turtle dreams

Diabolical queen
You’re drooling on my hand
Yes it gives you power
This statistical sham
Hiding from a childhood
Picked on in your youth
Now you really got them
With subconscious truth

Since the Fall
The terrible fall of man
We’ve seeked the ultimate contamination
The evil from the outside comes from within
Tidy little tidbits for necromancy

I do say that my id is bleeding
I do love you and your funky heart
If you do please excuse me
My libido just wet its pants
