This song was popular in my youth. I always found the lyrics and music to be a little quaint for the reality of the excitement and energy of being downtown. So, I decided a musical make over was needed to better represent the throbbing energy and excitement of going downtown.
I hope my playful rendition of the song does not offend those who loved the original. I performed this rendition in the late 70's and early 80's and it just seemed to bring a smile to both band and audience.
lyrics
Downtown
When you’re alone and life is making you lonely
You can always go downtown
When you got worries all the noise and the hurry
Seems to help you know downtown
Just listen to the music of the traffic in the city
Linger on the sidewalks with the neon signs so pretty
How could you lose?
The lights are much brighter there
You can forget all your troubles and forget all your cares
And go downtown
No finer place for sure
Downtown where everything is waiting for you
Don’t hang around and let your problems surround you
There are movie shows downtown
Maybe you know some little places to go
Where they never close downtown
Just listen to the rhythm of the gentle bossa nova
You’ll be dancing with them before the night is over
Happy again
The lights are much brighter there you can forget all your troubles
And forget all your cares and go downtown
Waiting for you tonight downtown
We’re going to be alright now
You may find somebody trying to help and understand you
Someone is who is just like you and needs a helpful hand
To guide them along
So maybe I’ll see you there
You can forget all your troubles and forget all your cares and go downtown
Things will be great when your downtown
Don’t wait a minute more
Downtown everything is waiting for you
