Anyone who has walked in snow has seen the icy imprints their footprints leave. As the snow melts away the icy footprints remain fully intact, and are the last remaining vestiges of the snow when a total thaw occurs. This is the opening image of Denouement, which is the final resolution of a play in which all the various story lines come together.
The icy steps of recognized events remain while the rest of history dissolves away. These aging facts become our official documented interpretation of what really happened and its importance. These facts become despotic because they are no longer challenged and current attitudes, objectives and goals are often dependent on these perspectives. In essence these aging facts become accepted Truth.
The recognized time line of history makes it seem almost inevitable, as every cause has its corresponding effect. Our official history is neatly tailored and organized, yet beneath this perfect hindsight lies the chaos and confusion of immediate possibility (those shimmering seas lurid underside).
Talk seen not absorbed, is historical truth which is not reflected upon and reanalyzed. Yet, just as once you accept a few basic ideal precepts like we do in math everything than becomes logically consistent. Official history and archeology are dependent on some original suppositions, and once these are adopted then the rest of the structure becomes all but necessary.
The line she goes back to him, refers to mankind's basic tendency to ignore the reality of sensorial human experience and instead make life about absolutes, beliefs and eternal truths. Whenever faced with the prospect of dealing with life on its own terms we feel a need to create Supreme Beings, Salvation and Eternal Truth.
While science, logic and analytic philosophy claim to be directly opposed to mysticism, religion and spirituality they all have the same goal of finding ideals that give life ultimate purpose and meaning. This is how mania (spiritual ecstasy) and reason fuse on converging planes.
Ephemeral life is judged to be empty, and meaning is found beyond the body and our experience. Instead of celebrating, savoring and appreciating the way we actually sense and function we predicate our entire existence on ideals that lie beyond sensorial experience.
As was mentioned in Mock Turtle Dreams the fall of man is inevitable if we we have a free will, and were created by a perfect god. The only way we could demonstrate our free will is to go against gods will, and deviating from the will of a perfect god is a sin or being evil. Hence, "man enters sight, thru his decline, god man un-coincide".
The song ends with the line "faith is the only one", for faith is the intersection of religion and science. It is a belief in truth, and a denial of man's lived reality where we do feel and experience choice, not scientific cause and effect, or fate. Immutable universal law and a perfect god both have no room for free choice and individual experience.
lyrics
Denouement 12/2/79
Icy steps
Frozen paths
Are left by aging facts
Despotic real
Sign meets sign
Truth unmined
Dapper thoughts
Seen from outside
Those shimmering seas
Lurid underside
Talk seen not absorbed
Moot point defined
By math’s design
She goes back to him
Lover of torsion
Bound by fate
Mania and reason
Fuse on converging planes
Faith is the only one
Comic god of perfection
The gift of free will
His perverse punch line
Man enters sight
Thru his decline
God/man uncoincide
